BANGKOK – Thailand is mourning the loss of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who passed away peacefully at the age of 47 after battling a prolonged illness. The announcement was made by Thailand’s Bureau of the Royal Household on Friday, confirming that the princess died on Thursday evening following more than three years of hospitalisation.
According to the palace, Princess Bajrakitiyabha had been receiving medical treatment since December 2022 after suffering a sudden illness linked to an abdominal infection. Despite extensive medical care and the use of life-supporting equipment, her condition gradually worsened over the years.
The royal household stated that the princess would lie in state at the Grand Palace in Bangkok, where members of the public and dignitaries are expected to pay their final respects. Her funeral will be conducted with the highest honours in accordance with Thai royal traditions.
Known affectionately across Thailand as “Princess Bha”, Bajrakitiyabha was a respected member of the royal family who combined royal duties with an accomplished professional career. She was the only child from King Vajiralongkorn’s first marriage to Soamsawali Kitiyakara.
Beyond her royal responsibilities, Princess Bajrakitiyabha earned recognition for her work in law, diplomacy and social advocacy. She received her education in Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States before obtaining a law degree from Cornell University. Her professional career included service as a prosecutor, diplomat and Thailand’s ambassador to Austria.
The princess was also actively involved with several United Nations initiatives and became a strong advocate for women’s rights. She worked on projects aimed at improving conditions for women in prisons and promoting equal opportunities for vulnerable groups in society.
Her dedication to public service earned her respect both within Thailand and internationally. Many viewed her as one of the most capable and influential members of the Thai royal family. She also maintained a close relationship with King Vajiralongkorn and was entrusted with important ceremonial and leadership roles, including a senior position within the royal bodyguard command prior to her illness.
The death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha marks a significant moment for Thailand’s royal institution. As the eldest daughter of the king, she played a prominent public role and was widely admired for balancing royal obligations with professional achievements in law and diplomacy.
As Thailand enters a period of mourning, tributes are expected from government leaders, diplomats and members of the public who remember her contributions to the nation and her commitment to humanitarian causes. Her passing closes an important chapter in modern Thai royal history while leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership and dedication to the people of Thailand.
