KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has taken swift diplomatic steps to defuse the growing conflict along the Thailand-Cambodia border, expressing Malaysia’s deep concern over the escalating situation.

In his capacity as ASEAN Chair for 2025, PM Anwar confirmed this evening that he had personally contacted both the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Hun Manet, and the Acting Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, Phumtham Wechayachai.

“I appealed directly to both leaders for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further violence and to create space for peaceful dialogue,” said Anwar in an official statement.

Tensions between Bangkok and Phnom Penh have risen in recent days, with reports of military confrontations and casualties surfacing from the border areas. The conflict has drawn the attention of ASEAN member states, prompting Malaysia to step forward in the name of regional stability.

According to PM Anwar, both Thailand and Cambodia have responded positively to Malaysia’s calls for calm and are open to pursuing diplomatic solutions.

“I welcome the willingness shown by both sides to consider the path of peace. Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate this process in the spirit of ASEAN unity and shared responsibility,” he said.

Anwar also stressed the importance of ASEAN solidarity in times of crisis. “ASEAN’s strength lies in its unity. Peace must always be our collective and unwavering choice,” he added.

The Prime Minister’s proactive engagement underlines Malaysia’s commitment to its regional leadership role and its dedication to maintaining harmony and cooperation among ASEAN nations.

As the chair for 2025, Malaysia is expected to play a more prominent role in promoting diplomatic dialogue and peaceful resolutions across Southeast Asia.
