SARIKEI – Three people were injured in a five-vehicle collision at a traffic light junction along Jalan Rentap here on Thursday morning.
The accident, which occurred at about 11am, involved five vehicles and caused concern among road users travelling through one of the town’s busy routes.
Sarikei District Police Chief, Superintendent Aswandy Anis, said initial investigations revealed that the crash took place at a traffic light intersection on Jalan Rentap.
According to him, a vehicle driven by a 24-year-old man is believed to have collided with four other vehicles that were stationary at the traffic lights.
“The accident occurred when a vehicle driven by a 24-year-old male crashed into four other vehicles that were stopped at the traffic light,” he said in a statement to the media on Thursday.
As a result of the impact, three individuals sustained injuries. The injured victims consisted of one driver and two passengers, while the remaining individuals involved in the accident escaped without injury.
Emergency responders and members of the public quickly assisted at the scene before the injured victims were transported to Hospital Sarikei for further treatment.
Superintendent Aswandy said the vehicle driven by the 24-year-old man was travelling from the direction of Hospital Sarikei towards the town centre when the incident occurred.
The crash caused temporary disruption to traffic flow in the area as authorities carried out investigations and cleared the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Police have urged motorists to remain vigilant, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and always pay attention to traffic conditions, particularly when approaching intersections and traffic lights.
Road safety experts frequently remind drivers that even a momentary lapse in concentration can lead to serious accidents, especially in high-traffic areas where vehicles may suddenly stop at junctions and traffic signals.
The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of careful driving and adherence to road safety regulations to prevent accidents and protect all road users.
Meanwhile, police have opened an investigation into the case under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
