KUCHING — A potentially dangerous situation near a popular residential area was successfully resolved through quick thinking, strong cooperation, and timely action by multiple parties, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and responsive public services.
The incident involved a large tiger bee hive discovered high up in a tree near Taman Lian Hua, an area frequently used by elderly residents for morning and evening exercise as well as health-related activities. Concerned residents raised the matter after noticing the hive’s presence in a location that posed a serious risk to public safety, especially given the aggressive nature of tiger bees when disturbed.
Upon receiving the feedback, MPP Ward H Councillor Gerald Goh acted without delay by contacting the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, commonly known as Bomba. After conducting an assessment, the Bomba team determined that the hive was located beyond normal operational reach. The area’s terrain also made it impossible for cranes or heavy vehicles to access the site, presenting a significant challenge to standard removal methods.
Rather than allowing the situation to drag on, an alternative solution was quickly explored. With assistance from a local resident, Mr. Chai, and the MPP Landscape Department, long bamboo poles were sourced, cut, and delivered to the site within a short time. This traditional yet practical approach proved to be the most suitable option under the circumstances.
Bomba then scheduled the hive removal operation for the same evening. Although light rain earlier in the day raised concerns, weather conditions improved just in time, allowing the operation to proceed smoothly and safely. Interestingly, rain resumed shortly after the Bomba team completed their task and left the area, underscoring the narrow window in which the operation was carried out.
The successful removal of the tiger bee hive ensured the safety of residents and restored peace of mind to the community, particularly senior citizens who regularly use the area. Councillor Gerald Goh expressed his appreciation to all parties involved, including MPP, Bomba, and community members, for their swift response and effective cooperation.
This incident stands as a clear example of how prompt reporting, decisive leadership, and multi-agency collaboration can prevent accidents and protect public wellbeing. It also reinforces the value of traditional problem-solving methods when modern equipment is not an option, proving that experience and cooperation remain the backbone of community safety.
