Tragedy on Pan Borneo Highway: Eight Dead, Two Injured in Fatal Crash

SARIKEI (Nov 21): A devastating collision on the Sarikei-Sibu stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway claimed the lives of eight individuals and left two others injured earlier today.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the fatal crash occurred around 3.40pm and involved a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a four-wheel-drive pickup truck.

Initial reports revealed that seven of the deceased were Indonesian nationals, while one was a Malaysian. A team from the Sarikei fire station was dispatched to the scene, located approximately 50km away, upon receiving an emergency call.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the aftermath of a catastrophic collision. Two individuals from the pickup truck had already been rescued by bystanders and were being treated by paramedics.

Unfortunately, two passengers from the Perodua Alza were ejected during the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining six occupants of the MPV were trapped inside, requiring specialised rescue equipment to extricate their bodies. Paramedics later confirmed their deaths.

The victims’ remains have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

This tragic accident highlights the importance of road safety, especially on major highways like the Pan Borneo. Authorities urge motorists to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents.
