KUCHING – KPJ Sentosa KL Specialist Hospital has made history by being the first hospital in Malaysia to introduce Spinal Epidural Balloon Decompression, a minimally invasive procedure to treat spinal stenosis. This breakthrough offers a safer and more effective alternative to traditional spinal surgery, especially for elderly patients.

Understanding Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a chronic condition that narrows the spaces within the spine, putting pressure on the nerves. It often causes pain, numbness, and difficulty walking, especially among older individuals. Traditional surgery may pose high risks to elderly patients or those with underlying conditions like heart disease, stroke, or diabetes.
Minimally Invasive and Quick Recovery
The new procedure, led by interventional pain specialist Dr. Chen Chee Kean, uses a small balloon inserted into the epidural space of the spine. Once inflated, the balloon opens the narrow areas, relieving pressure on nerves and improving blood circulation.
Performed under fluoroscopy (live X-ray) guidance, the procedure takes less than an hour, and most patients can return home the same day. It involves no major surgery, offering short recovery times and low risks such as infection or bleeding.
First in Malaysia
Dr. Chen, also the President-Elect of the Malaysian Society of Interventional Pain Specialists (MSIPP), is the first in the country to use the original device from South Korea’s Juvenui. With this, KPJ Sentosa KL becomes the first hospital in Malaysia to offer this cutting-edge treatment.
“We are proud to be at the forefront of modern healthcare and to give Malaysians access to safer and more effective spine treatment options,” Dr. Chen said.
This innovation reflects KPJ Healthcare’s continuous commitment to patient care and medical advancement.
