True MADANI Programme in Pakan Spurs Rural Economic Growth

PAKAN – The True MADANI Programme, recently introduced in Pakan, has been credited with creating new opportunities for rural communities to strengthen their economic resilience and improve household incomes.

Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, Assemblyman for Pakan, explained that the initiative, organised by the State Development Office (SDO) through the ICU of the Chief Minister’s Office, goes beyond physical assistance.

He emphasised that it also serves as a platform for economic education, equipping villagers with knowledge on capital management, entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency.

“The initiative provides knowledge on capital management, business and the importance of generating self-sufficiency and reduces over-dependence on government assistance,” he said during the launch of the Excavator Programme Sejati MADANI JKKK Rumah Regina anak Angoi on Monday.

He added that the programme reflects the government’s commitment to providing facilities and equipment that can be utilised to boost the local economy. By combining infrastructure support with training, the initiative aims to empower rural communities to take ownership of their economic development.

The Assemblyman highlighted that allocations under the Small Rural Projects (MRP) and Rural Transformation Projects (RTP) demonstrate both state and federal governments’ dedication to strengthening rural development comprehensively.

These funds, he explained, are not only directed towards infrastructure improvements but can also serve as seed capital for community-driven economic projects.

According to him, such initiatives provide opportunities for more than 200 longhouses in Pakan to collectively manage their economic activities. This includes ventures in agriculture, services and small-scale infrastructure, which are expected to generate sustainable income streams for residents.

Community leaders in Pakan welcomed the programme, noting that it offers practical tools and knowledge to help villagers diversify their livelihoods. By focusing on self-sufficiency, the initiative is seen as reducing reliance on government aid while encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship at the grassroots level.

The True MADANI Programme is part of a broader effort to ensure rural communities are not left behind in Sarawak’s development agenda. By combining education, infrastructure and financial support, the initiative aims to build stronger, more resilient communities capable of adapting to changing economic conditions.

Observers believe that the programme could serve as a model for other rural districts, demonstrating how targeted support and training can empower communities to take charge of their own economic futures.
