BINTANGOR – Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes in Malaysia are being strengthened to ensure students acquire multi-tasking abilities and industry-relevant skills in line with current labour market demands.

Meradong Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the Ministry of Human Resources has introduced the TVET Intake Unit System (UP_TVET) as the centralised channel for admissions nationwide. The platform manages student entry through two methods: Prime Intake and Year-round Intake.
As of 31 December 2024, Malaysia recorded 1,345 TVET institutions, including over 1,200 public institutions under 12 ministries, 24 state government institutions, and 652 private training centres.
Enrolment figures have shown steady growth, with 166,577 new students in 2022 rising to 212,022 in 2024. Overall participation also expanded from 394,976 in 2022 to 436,285 in 2024, with graduate employability reaching an impressive 94.5%.

Datuk Ding explained that under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government is prioritising TVET development by focusing on public well-being, income generation, education advancement, and stronger partnerships between training institutions and industry players. These collaborations aim to improve technological expertise and skill development for the future workforce.
He made the remarks while officiating the Sarawak Education Office Expo and Open Day, hosted by the Meradong District Education Office at SMK Kai Chung’s Chen Ling Mei Hall on Saturday.
Highlighting opportunities for students, Datuk Ding encouraged mastery of Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills to enhance employability, alongside strong proficiency in English, which remains vital for communication in global industries.

In conjunction with the event, he also presented Certificates of Excellence to 41 outstanding students from Meradong District who achieved excellent results in the 2024 SPM and STPM examinations.
