BETONG: A fatal accident occurred yesterday afternoon (May 20) when a lorry transporting an excavator veered off the road and plunged into a ravine along KM7, Jalan Lubok Antu-Sri Aman. The incident resulted in the deaths of the lorry driver and his attendant.

Details of the Incident

Lubok Antu police chief DSP Victor Ripon reported that the accident took place around 3:50 pm. The lorry was en route from Lemanak Engkilili to Lubok Antu junction when it is believed to have lost control, causing it to swerve and fall into a ravine by the roadside.

“As a result, the driver and his attendant, aged 32 and 44, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics,” DSP Ripon stated. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Sri Aman Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Following the accident, firefighters from Betong station were dispatched to the scene upon receiving a distress call. However, when they arrived, they found that the victims had already been extricated from the wreckage by workers from a nearby timber camp.

The case is currently under investigation under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, as confirmed by DSP Victor Ripon.
