Ulu Rimbas Road Upgrade Set for Completion by July 2028

BETONG – A 20.233-kilometre road upgrade project in Ulu Rimbas, Betong is scheduled to be completed by July 2028, with construction planned to take place over a 24-month period.

The project was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony, signalling the start of an infrastructure development intended to improve road connectivity and accessibility for communities in the surrounding area.

According to the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, construction will proceed in accordance with the stipulated contract period, with the overall works targeted for completion in July 2028.

The project involves upgrading and constructing a road stretching 20.233 kilometres in the Ulu Rimbas area. Once completed, the improved route is expected to provide a more efficient connection for residents and other road users.

Better road access is also expected to support the movement of people and goods within the surrounding area. Improved connectivity can be particularly important for communities that rely on road networks for access to essential services, economic activities and nearby population centres.

The project forms part of ongoing infrastructure development aimed at improving road networks in Sarawak. For areas outside major urban centres, reliable road connections can play an important role in supporting mobility and linking communities to wider economic and social activities.

Under the planned 24-month construction period, work is expected to progress through the various stages required to deliver the upgraded road. The completion target has been set for July 2028, subject to the implementation of the project according to its contract schedule.

JKR Sarawak said the completed project is expected to improve connectivity and accessibility in Ulu Rimbas, while also facilitating smoother movement for residents and other users of the route.

The upgraded road is also expected to contribute to the socio-economic development of the surrounding area. Improved transport links can provide communities with easier access to markets, services and other destinations while supporting the movement associated with local economic activity.

For residents, the project’s significance extends beyond the physical construction of the road. A more accessible road network can help reduce travel difficulties and provide a more reliable link between communities and key destinations.

The 20.233-kilometre length of the project also indicates the scale of the works required to improve connectivity across the Ulu Rimbas area. The construction period of 24 months provides the timeframe for the project to be delivered under the agreed contract arrangements.

With the groundbreaking ceremony now completed, the project will proceed according to the stipulated implementation schedule. The next major milestone will be the completion of the construction works, currently targeted for July 2028.

JKR Sarawak said the project is expected to bring longer-term benefits to residents and road users by strengthening the area’s transport infrastructure.

Once completed, the upgraded Ulu Rimbas road is expected to provide improved access and smoother movement while supporting broader socio-economic activity in Betong and its surrounding communities.
