MIRI – The UMAMI 2025 food entrepreneur programme has officially launched in Miri, aiming to equip individuals from B40 and underprivileged communities with professional training to enter the food and beverage (F&B) industry.
The initiative was unveiled during a press conference at the Sarawak State Library, Miri, and officiated by Miri Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang.
Also present was SAGO Group Director, Arif Abdul Rahman, who highlighted the programme’s success in transforming lives through culinary entrepreneurship.
Organised by SAGO Group with support from the Hong Leong Foundation, UMAMI is a 10-week incubator offering training, mentorship, and practical experience in the food sector.
“UMAMI is more than a programme—it’s a platform to elevate cultural heritage and uplift communities,” said Adam Yii.
He emphasised that UMAMI aligns with the Greater Miri Development Plan and the Miri Smart City Plan, supporting inclusive economic growth, sustainable SMEs, and cultural tourism.
“From Iban pansuh to Chinese bakeries, our food represents unity in diversity,” he added.
UMAMI integrates sustainability modules, encourages the use of local ingredients, and promotes inclusive participation, including single mothers and individuals without formal education.
The 2024 edition saw 100% graduation among its six participants, generating RM136,218 in combined income within six months. Participants also managed catering for a 3,500-guest Chinese New Year Open House, with individual earnings reaching RM8,000.
“This isn’t just about skills—it’s about confidence, community, and creating market-ready entrepreneurs,” said Arif Abdul Rahman.
Adam Yii also urged industry players, hotels, community organisations, and government agencies to support UMAMI 2025 through sponsorships, partnerships, and market access.
Applications for UMAMI 2025 are open until 13 August 2025.
