KUCHING – The historic site was visited by YBhg. Dato Georgina and the rest of the UNIFOR team. Led by Archbishop Dato Dr. Simon Poh, the delegation received a warm welcome during its visit.
The event was held at the kind invitation of Father Vincent Chin, Parish Priest, who has kindly invited us since last year after the completion of the church’s new building. The tour was a continuation of earlier engagements, giving guests the changed old part as well as the newly built part of the church.
The visit reflected the importance of St. Peter’s Church as a focal point of faith and community life in Padungan. The state of the art construction in a harmonious synthesis of modern and proto-modern elements represents the resilience and dedication of generations of worshippers. The new structure is a testament to continuity; the old building, a reminder of the community’s rich legacy.
A well-established churchgoer, the delegation was led by Archbishop Simon Poh at the church grounds, where preserving cultural and religious landmarks is crucial. He said that the church’s growth was not just a physical accomplishment but an indication of the local people working together as a community.
God’s servant Vincent Chin thanked the patrons of UNIFOR and dignitaries visiting: “The completion of the church is achieved through togetherness, being united with each other.” Now, he added, the building is a house of worship and a community activity centre, building ties among parishioners and residents.
The trip also highlighted UNIFOR’s efforts to promote inclusivity and respect among different faiths in Sarawak. Through its continued outreach by visiting local religious institutions across the state, UNIFOR is playing a pivotal role in fostering peace and empathy among all communities.
It was for many attendees a chance to think about faith, unity and heritage. The event, being graced by dignitaries and church leaders, emphasised the need for government agencies and religious bodies to work together in order to protect Sarawak’s heritage and spiritual landscape.
It ended with a conversation about beauty, prayer and the church, all things they got to know a little better together. With its mix of old and new, St. Peter’s Church continues to be a focal point of devotion as well as a symbol of continuity for the Padungan community.
