KOTA SAMARAHAN – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has reinforced its role as a pioneer in Malaysia’s digital transformation by becoming the first public university in the country to adopt two international technology certifications, Gemini Certified Educator and Google Certified Educator.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Hata Rasit said the initiative is designed to ensure that both staff and graduates are equipped with globally recognised skills, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and green technology.
“These certifications guarantee that UNIMAS lecturers and students are well-prepared to meet the demands of global industries, which increasingly rely on digital skills and AI literacy,” he stated during the university’s 29th Convocation Ceremony at DeTAR Putra.
As part of its broader digital agenda, UNIMAS has also launched a Digital Experience Hub in partnership with Google for Education. This makes it the first public university in Malaysia to integrate Chromebook adoption, Gemini AI, and Google Workspace into its teaching and learning ecosystem.
The hub provides internationally certified training opportunities, further strengthening the university’s reputation as a leader in digital education.
Professor Hata explained that these efforts not only enhance digital literacy within the campus community, but also align with Sarawak’s ambition of becoming the Digital Hub of Borneo.
He highlighted that platforms such as the Digital Technology NEXUS 2025 and collaborations with Loughborough University London are positioning UNIMAS as a regional driver of AI and sustainable technology.
Beyond academic innovation, UNIMAS has also prioritised student welfare through the introduction of the UNIMAS Prihatin app, a mobile platform designed to improve campus safety.
The app includes a quick-response SOS feature, enabling students and staff including persons with disabilities to alert campus security in emergencies. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to combining smart technology with community wellbeing.
“Digital transformation is not just about technology, it is a shift in work culture and mindset. We want every member of the UNIMAS community to become an agent of innovation who contributes positively to society and the nation,” Professor Hata emphasised.
The convocation ceremony this year celebrated 4,100 graduates, comprising 3,448 undergraduates and 652 postgraduates. In addition, three distinguished academics were honoured with the titles of Professor Emeritus and Professor Emerita for their outstanding contributions to higher education and research.
The event was attended by Sarawak Premier and UNIMAS Pro-Chancellor, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, alongside senior university leaders including Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie and Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, as well as parents and invited guests.
