KOTA SAMARAHAN – Three outstanding graduates of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) were awarded the Pingat Diraja (Royal Medal) during the university’s 29th Convocation Ceremony at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR Putra) on Monday.
The recipients were Shaashita Ramarau, 23, a graduate of the Accounting programme; Nur Hanis Fakhrul Nizam, 23, from Pahang, who completed his studies in counselling; and Nur Farhanah Rashdan, 22, a Social Work graduate from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSK).
The award, regarded as one of the highest honours for Malaysian graduates, is presented to individuals who demonstrate not only academic excellence but also strong character, leadership qualities, and resilience.
Shaashita, who credited her success to discipline and perseverance, said the university journey tested students on multiple levels.
“University tests us from a mental, physical and emotional perspective. If our personal life is out of balance, our studies will be compromised. So it is important to wake up every day with renewed enthusiasm and continue the routine diligently,” she explained.
She now plans to pursue postgraduate studies and hopes to build a career in finance, either with an international firm or by establishing her own company.
For Nur Hanis, the award symbolised a tribute to his parents’ unwavering support. “I came all the way from Pahang to Sarawak, and this is the first time my father has set foot at the university. I dedicate this award to my mother and family,” he said.
The eldest of six siblings, he reflected on the challenges of adapting to university life during the COVID-19 pandemic. He intends to continue his academic journey at UNIMAS.
Meanwhile, Nur Farhanah, who was active in student leadership and previously served as President of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Association, said her upbringing instilled in her the values of leadership and service.
“Since I was little, I was taught the values of leadership by my parents. When I came to Sarawak, I learned to adapt to the local culture and became more mature in leading,” she shared.
She has participated in national and international programmes and aspires to further her studies in Psychology abroad, while continuing her volunteer work with youth and integration initiatives.
The recognition of these three graduates reflects UNIMAS’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who excel academically and contribute meaningfully to society.
Their achievements also highlight the resilience and determination of the younger generation in overcoming challenges and striving for excellence.
The Royal Medal recipients have not only brought pride to UNIMAS but also serve as role models for future graduates, demonstrating that success is built on discipline, effort, and strong family support.
