BELAGA, Feb 5: A recent inspection by the Belaga District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) revealed that 16 landslides have been identified along Jalan Menjawah Belaga, with several critical sites requiring immediate intervention to prevent further damage.
The inspection was led by Kapit Division Resident Elvis Didit, alongside Belaga District Officer Bidah Lujah, Belaga District Police Chief DSP Jimbai Bala, and the Belaga Public Works Department (JKR) officer-in-charge James Dana. The primary aim was to evaluate the condition of the affected roads and develop both short- and long-term solutions for road safety and stability.

On Jalan Jiwa Murni Nanga Merit, the inspection reached only as far as Sungai Dungan, where three landslides were flagged for urgent attention. These sites are currently under the responsibility of the contractor tasked with maintaining the road. The situation remains concerning as continuous rainfall could worsen the already fragile conditions, potentially cutting off the main route to and from Belaga.

Given the possibility of further rainfall, the authorities are urging immediate action from all relevant agencies to address the landslides and ensure the safety of the residents in the affected areas. This includes additional monitoring and the installation of preventative measures to avoid further disruption to daily life in Belaga.
Representatives from key agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), were also present during the inspection. Their collaborative efforts highlight the urgent need for a coordinated response to the growing risk.
