BA’ KELALAN: The construction of a new road linking Ba’ Kelalan to Bario is set to transform access to education for students in Sarawak’s interior.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, highlighted the impact of the new Sabah Sarawak Link Road 2 (SSLR 2) and the border road connecting Ba’ Kelalan to Long Banga via Bario. These infrastructure projects will not only boost economic development but also make education more accessible to rural students.

Better Roads, Easier School Access
Datuk Gerawat emphasized that secondary school access in Bario remains a major challenge for many students. The new road is expected to shorten travel times, improve safety, and reduce the need for students to stay in hostels far from their families.

“We understand the struggles of students and parents. With this road, children can travel to school more comfortably and safely,” he said.
Local residents welcomed the plan, as many parents currently send their children to boarding schools due to poor road access. With improved roads, students may have the choice to commute daily rather than live away from home.
Development Projects for Community Growth
During his visit, Datuk Gerawat also inspected the fully completed Ba’ Kelalan Immigration Border Post New Building, which is set to operate soon. He expressed hope that all development projects in the area will progress smoothly to improve the quality of life for the local community.
This infrastructure upgrade is a major step forward in bridging the education gap for rural Sarawak, ensuring that students have the same opportunities as their urban counterparts. — UKAS EDITION
