OpenAI is aiming to redefine the future of personal and professional assistance by transforming ChatGPT into what it calls a “super assistant” — a deeply integrated AI companion designed to support nearly every facet of a user’s daily life.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman describes the initiative as an evolution of ChatGPT from a question-answering bot to a “super-competent colleague” — a smart agent capable of understanding users’ routines, automating tasks, and proactively helping with everything from scheduling meetings to performing web-based activities.
From Chatbot to ‘Operator’
One of the most ambitious elements of this transition is the launch of Operator, a new feature that allows ChatGPT to carry out real-world tasks autonomously. Operator can interact with websites on users’ behalf, filling forms, making bookings, and even completing online purchases — effectively turning the AI into a digital concierge.
In addition, OpenAI has rolled out a Tasks feature (currently in beta), which gives ChatGPT personal assistant-like abilities. Users can set reminders, manage tasks, and receive proactive suggestions based on past conversations.
Another breakthrough is Deep Research, which enables ChatGPT to browse the web and create comprehensive, cited reports on virtually any topic — a tool particularly valuable for students, journalists, and professionals alike.
A Future Beyond Screens
OpenAI has partnered with legendary designer Jony Ive to develop a new hardware device that could potentially replace smartphones and computers as users’ primary point of contact with AI. This device is expected to prioritize voice and contextual interactions over screen time, supporting a more natural and immersive experience.
The company is also advocating for open integration across platforms, urging Apple, Google, and Microsoft to allow users to select ChatGPT as their default AI assistant — much like choosing a preferred browser.
