SIBU, April 11 – In yet another shocking discovery, Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), together with the police, has uncovered a case of electricity theft at a three-storey shophouse in Jalan Jerrwit Barat, Sibu — all linked to illegal cryptocurrency mining operations.
This incident follows two similar cases recently found at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, pointing to a disturbing trend in the area.
According to SESCO, the culprits had illegally tapped electricity directly from the main incoming power lines, bypassing both the metering system and necessary safety precautions. The illegal connection was hidden along the five-foot walkway of the premises and used to power 12 cryptocurrency mining servers non-stop.

“The estimated monthly losses from this illegal activity are around RM7,900 due to unbilled electricity usage,” said SESCO in a press statement.
During the joint raid, all the illegal cables were dismantled and confiscated. A police report was also filed, and the property owner will be summoned to assist in ongoing investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which can result in a fine of up to RM200,000 and/or five years’ imprisonment.
Sarawak Energy highlighted the dangers of such activities, explaining that cryptocurrency mining consumes large amounts of electricity. Illegal tapping can cause power outages, fire hazards, and serious damage to electrical wiring and equipment.
SESCO reminded property owners to be vigilant about their tenants’ use of electricity, as landlords can also be held responsible for any illegal activities happening on their premises.
