KUCHING – University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) currently has about 5,700 students, with the university continuing to expand its focus on STEM education and exploring new academic programmes.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg received a courtesy visit from the university’s new Vice Chancellor, Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohammad Shahril bin Osman, at the Sarawak Premier’s Office at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on 23 September.
The meeting provided an opportunity for Mohammad Shahril to introduce himself to the Premier and brief him on the latest developments at UTS.
Among the matters discussed were the university’s current student population, implementation of the Free Higher Education Scheme (FTES), academic programmes and support provided to students.
UTS has about 5,700 students, of whom approximately 2,800 are receiving benefits under FTES. A further 1,500 students receive allowances that include housing assistance and pocket money.
The university also continues to place emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. Of the 18 undergraduate programmes currently offered by UTS, 16 are STEM-based.
The university is also looking at ways to incorporate artificial intelligence into its operations as part of efforts to improve services and work processes.
The planned use of AI is expected to support efforts to enhance how services and internal processes are delivered as the university develops its operations.
UTS is also considering the introduction of additional academic programmes, including programmes in medicine.
A feasibility study for the proposed medical programme was completed in July. The study was subsequently presented to the UTS Board of Directors on 17 September for further consideration and follow-up.
The proposed expansion would add to the range of academic disciplines being considered by the university as it continues to develop its higher education offerings.
The Premier’s meeting with the new Vice Chancellor also provided an opportunity for UTS to outline its current direction and future plans, including its continued emphasis on STEM programmes and the potential application of emerging technologies in university administration.
Mohammad Shahril also extended an invitation to Abang Johari to attend the UTS Convocation Ceremony, which is scheduled to be held on 14 November.
The courtesy visit took place as UTS continues its academic and institutional development, with discussions covering student support, higher education access, technology adoption and possible expansion into new fields of study.
Also present during the meeting was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Datu Haji Adana bin Haji Jed.
