25 Smokers Nabbed in Kuching for Violating No-Smoking Zones

25 Smokers Nabbed in Kuching for Violating No-Smoking Zones

KUCHING – In a firm stand to uphold public health regulations, the Kuching Division Health Office has issued 25 Notices of Offences to individuals caught smoking in restricted areas during a law enforcement operation on 5 August 2025.

The operation, conducted by the Inspectorate and Legal Unit, targeted several public areas including MJC, Pine Square, and the Emart Batu Kawa surroundings. These zones are gazetted as no-smoking areas under Malaysian public health laws.

A total of 28 officers — comprising 15 Authorized Officers and 13 supporting personnel — took part in the enforcement activity, aimed at curbing irresponsible smoking habits and protecting non-smokers from secondhand smoke.

“This operation is part of our ongoing effort to ensure strict compliance with existing public health laws. We want to remind everyone that clean air is a basic right of all Malaysians,” said a spokesperson from the Health Office.

The enforcement team emphasized that similar operations will continue around Kuching City to raise awareness and educate the public, especially smokers, about the importance of adhering to no-smoking rules in public places.

Authorities stressed that smoking in prohibited areas not only breaks the law but also endangers public health by polluting the air and increasing the risk of respiratory diseases.

The public is strongly encouraged to support these efforts by voicing their concerns and upholding their right to clean air. “Morning, afternoon, evening or night — our commitment to enforcement remains,” the Health Office reiterated through a public message.

Members of the public can contribute by reporting violations and refraining from unhealthy practices themselves. Everyone plays a role in keeping the environment smoke-free and safe for all. – Pejabat Kesihatan Bahagian Kuching
