KUCHING – Police in Kuching have successfully apprehended two local men in connection with a cable theft case that recently went viral on social media. The arrests, confirmed by the Kuching District Police Chief, took place late last night in the Petra Jaya area near Jalan Merdeka and Jalan Astana.
The suspects, aged between 30 and 38, were found to be involved in the illegal cutting and theft of essential cables. During the operation, police seized three vehicles believed to be used in the crime: a silver Perodua Viva, a grey Perodua Myvi, and a blue Proton Wira. Several tools suspected to have been used in the cable cutting were also recovered.
Further investigations revealed that both men had prior criminal records. Urine tests conducted by the authorities indicated that they had consumed drugs, which may have influenced their involvement in the illegal activities.
The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code for trespassing against a cable. This offence carries a potential prison term of up to two years, a fine, or both. ACP Alexson Naga Anak Chabu, the Kuching District Police Chief, urged the public to refrain from engaging in criminal activities and to cooperate with authorities in maintaining public safety.
Authorities also called on members of the public who may have information related to criminal activities to come forward. Individuals with tips can contact the Kuching IPD Control Centre at 082-244444. The police reiterated that community cooperation is vital in curbing crime and ensuring the safety of the city.
The arrests highlight the swift action of local law enforcement in responding to crimes that threaten public property and social order. The case continues to be investigated, and police have assured the public that all necessary steps will be taken to bring the suspects to justice.
