Wasp Nest Safely Destroyed by APM at Mukah Home

MUKAH – A swift intervention by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Mukah successfully neutralised a hazardous wasp nest at a residential property on 15 July 2026, ensuring the safety of the occupants and surrounding community.

The incident was reported to the Mukah District Operations Control Centre (PKOD Mukah) by members of the public, who raised concerns about the presence of an insect nest on the exterior wall of a house. Upon inspection, officers discovered a wasp nest roughly the size of a takraw ball firmly attached to the structure.

APM personnel deployed a combination of ridsect spray and controlled fire techniques to eliminate the nest. The operation was carried out under strict safety measures, preventing any risk to residents or the responding team. Officials confirmed that the procedure was completed without incident, and the area was declared safe following the removal.

This latest case highlights the growing number of insect-related emergencies across Sarawak, particularly in residential and plantation areas. Wasp nests, often built in concealed spaces such as roof eaves, tree branches, or wall cavities, can pose serious risks to human health. Stings from certain species may trigger allergic reactions, and large colonies can become aggressive if disturbed.

According to entomology experts, Malaysia’s tropical climate provides ideal conditions for wasp populations to thrive. The abundance of food sources, including nectar and smaller insects, contributes to their rapid nesting behaviour. In rural districts such as Mukah, where homes are often surrounded by vegetation, encounters with wasps are relatively common.

Local authorities have repeatedly urged residents not to attempt nest removal on their own due to the dangers involved. Professional intervention is considered the safest option, as trained personnel are equipped with protective gear and appropriate methods to handle such situations. The use of chemical sprays combined with controlled burning remains one of the most effective techniques for neutralising nests without causing wider environmental harm.

The Mukah Civil Defence Force continues to emphasise its readiness to respond to community emergencies. In a statement, the department reiterated its commitment to public safety, encouraging residents to remain vigilant and to report hazardous situations promptly. The hotline for APM Mukah, available 24 hours a day, is 084-872814.

The operation also reflects the broader role of APM in Sarawak, which extends beyond disaster response to include wildlife management, road accident assistance, and community safety programmes. Recent months have seen multiple interventions across the state, ranging from snake captures in rural villages to insect nest removals in residential areas. These actions underline the versatility and preparedness of the force in safeguarding communities.

Residents of Mukah expressed appreciation for the timely response, noting that the presence of the nest had caused concern among families living nearby. The successful removal has restored a sense of security, particularly for households with children and elderly members who are more vulnerable to insect stings.

The Civil Defence Force’s motto, “Ready, Fast, With Integrity,” continues to resonate with the public as a reflection of its operational standards. The department also reminds citizens of its guiding principle: “There is a Disaster, Call APM.”

As Sarawak experiences ongoing development and expansion of residential areas into previously forested land, encounters with wildlife and insects are expected to remain a challenge. Authorities stress the importance of community cooperation, urging residents to report emergencies quickly and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

With the latest intervention in Mukah, APM once again demonstrated its crucial role in maintaining public safety and reinforcing trust within the community.
