BINTANGOR – The Meradong and Julau District Council (MDMJ) has entered a new chapter of leadership with the appointment of Wee Teck Min as its chairman.

Wee, who also serves as the Meradong District Officer, will oversee council operations for the 2025–2028 term, following a swearing-in ceremony attended by councillors and officials.

The installation of new leadership comes at a time when Sarawak’s local councils are undergoing reforms to strengthen grassroots governance.

Earlier in May 2025, the Sarawak Legislative Assembly passed the Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill, paving the way for expanded representation and improved service delivery across the state. The move reflects growing expectations for councils to address increasingly complex community needs.

Meradong State Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, who officiated at the ceremony, extended his congratulations to Wee and urged councillors to remain dedicated to their responsibilities.

“I hope that all MDMJ Council members would continue to be committed and work together in ensuring the cleanliness of drainage, garbage disposal management according to the set schedule, maintenance of garbage bins, grass cutting and other related matters for the well-being of the residents,” he said.

Datuk Ding emphasised that collaboration between council members, government agencies and residents is essential to ensure smooth implementation of development projects.

He highlighted that beyond cleanliness and infrastructure upkeep, the council should also prioritise enhancing public facilities, beautifying towns, and supporting economic growth through community-focused programmes.

The swearing-in ceremony also marked the official appointment of 31 councillors to serve alongside Wee for the new term.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, who attended a related ceremony earlier in April, had similarly called on councillors to uphold integrity and diligence in their duties.

Wee’s appointment is expected to reinforce the council’s role in delivering effective governance. The MDMJ, established in 1956 under the Local Authority Order, has long been tasked with overseeing local administration in Meradong and Julau.

With new leadership, the council is anticipated to continue its mission of improving service delivery and responding to the needs of the community.

Also present at the swearing-in was MDMJ Secretary Lau Chi Sing, who joined dignitaries and council members in welcoming the new chairman.

The appointment of Wee Teck Min signals renewed momentum for the council, with expectations that the leadership team will strengthen community engagement and ensure that development projects benefit residents across Meradong and Julau.
