SRI AMAN: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has launched an investigation into claims of a whale carcass spotted near Pulau Seduku after a video of the alleged discovery went viral on social media.
In a statement on Facebook, SFC clarified that despite extensive search efforts, no whale carcass has been located.
The incident was first reported by fishermen from Sebuyau, who claimed to have seen the whale near the Triso-Sebuyau Bridge during low tide at around 10 am on November 19.
“The fishermen immediately shared the video with the Lingga District Officer,” SFC said.
Responding swiftly, SFC deployed a team at 7 am to search areas from Bakong to Tanjung Bijat. Later, updated information redirected the search to Kuala Triso, where the carcass was believed to have drifted further out to sea.
Search efforts faced challenges, including heavy rain and strong currents, which prevented a Bomba Sebuyau boat from venturing beyond the Triso Ferry Jetty.
SFC acknowledged the collaborative efforts of agencies such as the Lingga District Office, Sebuyau Sub-District Office, Sri Aman Resident’s Office, Museum Department, Lingga Police Station, and Bomba Sebuyau in the operation.
To ensure preparedness for similar incidents, SFC and local authorities have engaged community leaders to monitor and report any future sightings of stranded marine animals.
Meanwhile, Bomba has pledged to increase surveillance along coastal areas, while SFC ranger posts remain on high alert.
SFC has urged the public to cooperate by reporting wildlife sightings to local authorities or the corporation directly.
“The corporation appreciates the support of local communities and agencies in addressing this incident and ensuring a coordinated response,” SFC added.
