600 Women Join W.I.R.A Programme, Empowering Communities in Lundu

LUNDU – A total of 600 women from 58 villages across Opar and the Lundu District took part in the Wanita, Inspirasi, Realisasi dan Aksi (W.I.R.A) programme, held at the Sarawak Technical Excellence Centre (CENTEXS) Lundu on Sunday.

The initiative, designed to strengthen women’s roles in family and community life, featured a wide range of workshops and educational sessions.

Participants engaged in activities such as handicraft making, floral decoration, traditional pastry preparation, hairdressing and makeup.

The programme also included mental health talks, CPR training and community education sessions, offering holistic exposure to skills and knowledge.

Organised by the Pertubuhan Pembangunan Insan Sarawak (PPIS) together with government ministries, agencies, NGOs and key partners, the programme was launched by Opar Assemblyman Billy Sujang.

He described their participation as a reflection of their determination to learn, adapt and contribute positively to society.

“Semangat wanita untuk belajar, berubah dan memberi impak positif kepada masyarakat terus menyala kuat. Inilah semangat yang kita mahu dan biarlah ia terus membara,” he said, highlighting the importance of sustaining this drive.

Billy emphasised that women’s development is a shared agenda requiring collective support from multiple stakeholders.

He pointed to the slogan ‘Wanita Perkasa, Keluarga Berjaya’ as a reminder of the responsibility to build a strong and prosperous society together.

Organisers noted that the programme was not only about skill-building but also about fostering confidence and resilience among participants.

By equipping women with practical knowledge and exposure, the initiative aims to empower them to take on greater roles in both family and community development.

Billy added that the knowledge and experiences gained during the programme would serve as motivation for participants to advance further in life, strengthening their contributions to households and society.

The W.I.R.A programme in Lundu reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to empowering women as key agents of social and economic progress.

With strong participation and diverse activities, the event underscored the vital role of women in shaping resilient and united communities.
