Woman Arrested for Attempting to Attack Sultan Nazrin at Perak Merdeka Event

IPOH: A woman was arrested after attempting to attack the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, during the state-level National Day celebration here this morning.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 41-year-old suspect was detained after rushing onto the main stage while the Perak state anthem was being played. Security personnel acted swiftly, restraining her before she could cause harm.

He said initial investigations revealed that the woman had a record of psychiatric treatment and is currently under specialist care. She also had a past history of drug-related offences, but her urine test taken today was confirmed negative. The case is now being investigated under Section 325/511 of the Penal Code for attempted grievous bodily harm.

The incident unfolded as Sultan Nazrin stood in respect during the official proceedings. The woman, who had been seated among the invited guests, suddenly ran forward from the back row and managed to grab the Sultan’s hand before being stopped by security guards.

Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere as tense for a brief moment, but the situation was quickly brought under control without any major disruption. Sultan Nazrin remained composed throughout and continued with the event after the woman was escorted away.

Datuk Noor Hisam praised the quick action of the security team, noting that their immediate response ensured the safety of the Sultan and other dignitaries present. He added that public safety remains the top priority for police, especially during major national celebrations.

Authorities have urged the public not to speculate about the woman’s motives while investigations are ongoing. Despite the incident, the Perak state-level National Day celebration continued smoothly, with Sultan Nazrin leading the programme as planned.
