YB Billy Sujang Praises Sarawak’s Progress, Suggests Longer DUN Session

KUCHING – YB Billy Sujang highlights Sarawak’s strong growth and leadership under Premier Abang Johari and proposes longer DUN sittings to better serve the people.

YB Billy Sujang, the State Assemblyman for N.01 Opar, gave a clear and strong speech during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting on 28 May 2025. He began by thanking the people of Opar for trusting him since he was elected in February 2022. Billy moved the motion to support the opening speech by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak on 15 May. He praised the way all assembly members bring up issues that affect their local areas and suggested that the DUN sitting should be extended from 8 to 10 days. This, he said, would give more time for important debates and allow more questions to be answered.

Billy reminded everyone that the role of the opposition is to provide checks and balances, but they should do so based on facts and not personal attacks. He criticized past opposition claims that Sarawak would go bankrupt, noting that today Sarawak is doing well and is even recognised as a high-income region by the World Bank. He said this proves the state is in good hands under the leadership of Premier Abang Johari.

He also listed six new bills passed during this sitting, including those related to land, biodiversity, and state funding. He said these bills are important for Sarawak’s future. Billy called for more federal funding for development, especially in rural areas, and pointed out that Sarawak is now earning more revenue thanks to smart planning by the state government. He believes more of this revenue should go directly to help the people.

Billy proudly shared Sarawak’s big achievements: becoming the main shareholder in Affin Bank, taking over MASwings to form AirBorneo, controlling its own gas through PETROS, and using 62% renewable energy. He also highlighted Sarawak’s success in the 2024 SUKMA Games and the recent launch of the SKAS program to help low-income families. By 2026, Sarawak students will also enjoy free university education and financial aid.

In closing, Billy gave full support to Premier Abang Johari and encouraged all leaders to stay focused on building a better and stronger Sarawak.
