Yap Channels RM48,000 MRP Aid to St Margaret Church Stampin
KUCHING: The close working relationship between elected representatives and local communities was once again reflected when Kota Sentosa assemblyman YB Wilfred Yap attended Holy Mass at St Margaret Church in Stampin, reaffirming his consistent support for the Christian community in the area.
YB Yap, who represents the N12 Kota Sentosa constituency, said his presence at the church was not merely ceremonial but part of his ongoing effort to stay connected with people at the grassroots level. Following the Mass, he presented Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants totalling RM48,000 to the church, continuing a pattern of assistance that has been extended over the years.
The allocation was aimed at supporting both physical development and community-related needs. A major portion of the funds was channelled towards the church building fund to assist with ongoing construction and upgrading works. Another portion was allocated to strengthen church-based community and welfare programmes, which benefit parishioners as well as outreach activities involving the wider neighbourhood. A smaller contribution was also provided for the purchase of church server vests, recognising the role of servers in supporting liturgical services and nurturing a sense of responsibility among young parish members.
In his remarks, YB Yap emphasised that places of worship play a vital role beyond religious functions. He said churches, mosques, temples and other religious institutions serve as centres for charity work, moral guidance and social unity, especially in a diverse state like Sarawak.
“As a people’s representative, my responsibility is to serve all communities without distinction. Supporting places of worship and their activities helps maintain harmony, compassion and mutual respect among our people,” he said.
He also highlighted that the Sarawak Government, under the leadership of Premier YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has consistently practised an inclusive approach by providing fair and equitable assistance to all religious groups across the state.
This latest contribution adds to previous government grants and allocations that have supported St Margaret Church Stampin in its development and welfare initiatives. YB Yap said such continuity is important to ensure that assistance brings lasting impact rather than short-term relief.
He reaffirmed his commitment to remain accessible to residents and community leaders, stressing that effective representation requires presence, listening and delivery. According to him, government resources must always be channelled in a responsible and transparent manner to meet genuine needs on the ground.
Looking ahead, YB Yap said he will continue working closely with all communities in Kota Sentosa to build a constituency that values unity, care and steady progress, in line with Sarawak’s long-standing tradition of mutual respect among its people.
