BELADIN – The tradition of ziarah raya continues to play a vital role in strengthening friendships and fostering unity among communities in Sarawak, particularly during the festive season of Aidilfitri.
On Monday, Batang Lupar Member of Parliament Mohamad Shafizan Kepli visited several homes in Kampung Beladin as part of the long-standing practice of festive visits.
His presence was warmly welcomed by residents, who appreciated the continuation of this cultural tradition.
Speaking during the visit, Shafizan highlighted the significance of ziarah raya as a means of reinforcing family ties and brotherhood.
He described Syawal as a month of forgiveness, noting that the act of visiting one another provides a platform for reconciliation and the strengthening of friendships.
“Syawal is transformed into a month of forgiveness, and this ziarah raya is a platform for us to forgive each other and strengthen friendships with each other,” he said.
He encouraged residents to take full advantage of the festive period by increasing their visiting activities and practising mutual forgiveness, which he emphasised as essential for maintaining community harmony.
Shafizan also underscored the importance of charity and open houses, locally known as ringgo, as opportunities to bring together relatives and friends returning to their hometowns.
Such gatherings, he explained, not only celebrate the end of Ramadan but also serve as a reminder of the values of unity, gratitude and compassion.
He added that Aidilfitri is more than a religious celebration marking the conclusion of fasting; it is also a chance to strengthen bonds, instil appreciation for blessings, and share joy with those in need. He urged the community to remember the less fortunate and extend kindness during the festive season.
“I hope that practices like this can be continued so that our community continues to be united and family ties can be strengthened,” he said.
The visit in Kampung Beladin reflects the broader Sarawakian tradition of inclusivity, where festive celebrations are not only about religious observance but also about building bridges across communities.
By continuing the practice of ziarah raya, leaders and residents alike contribute to a stronger, more cohesive society.
