BINTULU – A total of 1,681 monthly assistance recipients under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) in Bintulu have received special donations in conjunction with the 2026 Gawai Day Flower Bouquet Ceremony.
The event, held at a local shopping mall on 5 May, was organised to ease the financial burden of vulnerable groups ahead of the festive season.
Of the total beneficiaries, 100 individuals were invited to attend the ceremony in person, where they received their donations directly. Each recipient was given an additional RM100 in cash along with a hamper sponsored by Petronas.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Majang Renggi, said the initiative was intended to help families prepare for the celebration in a more organised manner.
“As we prepare to celebrate the upcoming Gawai Day, we must not forget those who are less fortunate,” he remarked during his speech.
He described the Sejambak Kasih Programme as a meaningful effort that embodies values of compassion, care and unity. According to him, these principles form the foundation of Sarawak’s strength as a multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural society, ensuring inclusivity during festive occasions.
The ceremony also included the handover of the Kenyalang Gold Card to three recipients: Eyok Ding, Jamat Ragan and Jonathan Balau.
The card provides senior citizens with access to various benefits and support services, reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to community welfare.
Bintulu District Officer Awang Mohammed Nizam Awang Ali Bohan and Bintulu Community Welfare Officer representative Jemat Kanchin were among the guests present at the event.
Their attendance highlighted the collaborative effort between government agencies, corporate partners and the community in supporting those in need.
The donations reflect a broader initiative to ensure that festive celebrations are inclusive and meaningful for all, particularly for those facing financial challenges.
By combining government support with corporate contributions, the programme demonstrates how partnerships can strengthen social welfare delivery and foster a spirit of togetherness.
The ceremony concluded with expressions of gratitude from recipients, who welcomed the assistance as timely support in preparing for Gawai Day.
The initiative underscores Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to community well-being and inclusivity, ensuring that no group is left behind during cultural and festive celebrations.
