MIRI – Two local men have been sentenced to prison terms after admitting to their involvement in the concealment and disposal of stolen property. The sentencing, handed down by the Miri Magistrate’s Court on July 24, 2026, marks the conclusion of a police investigation into a theft incident that occurred earlier in the month.
The 23-year-old defendant received a six-month jail term, while his 37-year-old accomplice was sentenced to eight months behind bars. Both individuals had pleaded guilty to charges under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which pertains to intentionally aiding in the concealment, removal, or disposal of stolen goods.

Upon inspection, he realised that several items of work equipment were missing. Among the stolen items were four rolls of copper cable, each measuring 15 metres in length. Copper theft remains a persistent issue in many industrial and residential areas due to the high resale value of the metal.
Acting quickly, the vehicle owner reviewed footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the location. The recordings revealed that the theft had taken place around 4:00 am.
The footage captured a male suspect removing the items from the vehicle without permission. This visual evidence proved crucial in guiding the subsequent police investigation.
