MIRI, April 4 — A joint enforcement operation by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters and the Road Transport Department has resulted in 21 police summonses and 53 JPJ notices being issued in a special motorcycle operation across the district.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee bin Abdullah said the operation was conducted from 8.00pm on April 3 until 3.00am on April 4. The operation focused on several key roads known as gathering points for illegal racing activities, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Bandar Miri, Jalan Bypass, Jalan Bakam, Jalan Bekenu/Sibuti and Jambatan Bekenu.
He said the main objective of the operation was to prevent illegal street racing and to ensure that motorcyclists comply with traffic regulations. The enforcement team inspected a total of 33 individuals, comprising 28 men and five women, along with 31 motorcycles during the operation.
According to ACP Mohd Farhan, the inspections revealed multiple traffic and vehicle-related offences. Among the offences detected were riding without a valid driving licence, illegal modification of motorcycle structures, altered exhaust systems, absence of side mirrors, and failure to display proper registration numbers. Some motorcycles were also found using decorative or “fancy” registration numbers that do not comply with regulations.
He stressed that such modifications are not only against the law but can also compromise road safety and disturb public order, particularly when involving loud exhaust systems. The police and JPJ will continue to carry out joint operations to monitor and curb illegal racing and unsafe vehicle modifications in the district.
ACP Mohd Farhan advised all road users to drive and ride responsibly, obey traffic laws, and avoid involvement in illegal street racing or gang-related activities. He reminded vehicle owners not to modify the original structure of their vehicles without proper approval, as this can endanger lives and lead to enforcement action.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining order on the roads in Miri. Regular operations will be conducted to safeguard the community and to send a clear message that traffic violations and illegal racing will not be tolerated.
