MIRI, April 12 — A total of 26 foreign nationals were detained by the Sarawak Immigration Department during a late-night enforcement operation known as Ops Gegar at an entertainment outlet in Niah, Miri, early Sunday morning.
The operation was carried out by the department’s Special Action Team following several weeks of intelligence gathering and close monitoring of premises suspected of employing undocumented foreign workers. Authorities moved in at around 1.00 am to inspect the location.
During the raid, a total of 31 individuals were screened. This included five local citizens and 26 Indonesian nationals. Immigration officers discovered that only four of the foreign individuals were able to produce valid passports, while the remaining individuals failed to show any legal travel documents when requested.
All 26 foreign nationals were subsequently detained for various immigration offences. These offences include misuse of temporary work visit passes, overstaying beyond permitted periods, and failure to possess valid travel documentation. The arrests were made in accordance with the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963, which govern the entry and stay of foreigners in Malaysia.
Initial investigations also revealed that the employer or owner of the premises is suspected of hiring foreign workers without valid permits. Authorities believe the premises may have knowingly allowed undocumented individuals to remain and work on site, which is a serious violation under Malaysian immigration laws.
The Sarawak Immigration Department has confirmed that further investigations are ongoing to identify the extent of the offences and to determine whether additional action will be taken against those responsible for managing the premises. Employers found guilty of such offences may face strict penalties, including fines and possible imprisonment.
All detained individuals have been transferred to the Bekenu Immigration Depot, where they will undergo further processing and investigation. The department reiterated its commitment to continue strict enforcement operations to curb illegal immigration activities in the state.
The authorities also urged employers to comply fully with immigration laws and ensure that all foreign workers are properly documented to avoid legal consequences.
In conclusion, the operation highlights the government’s continued efforts to address illegal employment and immigration violations in Sarawak. Enforcement actions such as Ops Gegar serve as a reminder that strict compliance with the law is essential for maintaining order and security.
