MIRI – The Royal Malaysian Police have stepped up their fight against drug abuse in northern Sarawak with the launch of a special operation that saw 31 individuals arrested over three days.
The operation, known as Sarawak Special Screening Op Bil.3/2026, was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters from 26 to 28 February around the Miri district. The coordinated enforcement effort targeted suspected drug activities in several locations identified through intelligence and public information.
According to the police, a total of 18 local men, five local women and seven foreign men were detained during the operation. The arrests involved various offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Two cases are being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Act, which relates to possession of dangerous drugs. Eleven cases fall under Section 12(3), while 30 cases are being investigated under Section 15(1)(a), which involves drug use. Police also seized suspected methamphetamine, commonly known as syabu, weighing approximately 14 grams with an estimated street value of RM1,562.
In addition to the drug-related arrests, one individual was detained under an arrest warrant after failing to appear at the Miri Court for a previous drug charge.
All suspects have been remanded to assist in investigations. Police are in the process of recording statements from witnesses and gathering further evidence before submitting the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.
The police stressed that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified in Miri to curb drug abuse and trafficking. Firm action will be taken against anyone found involved in such activities, regardless of status or background.
The authorities also urged members of the public to play their role by providing information related to drug abuse or trafficking. Cooperation between the community and law enforcement remains crucial in ensuring that Miri and Sarawak remain safe from the threat of drugs.
The Royal Malaysian Police reaffirmed that there will be no compromise against those who break the law, especially in cases involving dangerous drugs that can harm individuals, families and the wider community.
