84-Year-Old Woman Dies After Car Plunges Into River

JEMPOL – An 84-year-old woman lost her life after the Perodua Myvi she was driving skidded off the road and plunged into a river in Batu Kikir town here on Tuesday morning.

The tragic incident occurred at about 10.45am and is believed to have taken place while the victim was returning home after running an errand. Authorities said the elderly woman had earlier gone to purchase goods at a pet shop before the accident happened.

Jempol District Police Chief, Superintendent Norhisham Mustapar, said initial investigations revealed that the victim was driving along a stretch of road in Batu Kikir when the vehicle suddenly lost control at a bend.

“While passing a corner, the car driven by the victim is believed to have skidded before falling into the river,” he said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Emergency responders were alerted to the scene shortly after the accident. However, the victim was found to have sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police are urging members of the public who may have witnessed the accident to come forward to assist in the investigation. Those with information are requested to contact the Investigating Officer, Inspector Mohd Amirul Syafiq Mohd Yusof, at 016-2348669.

The incident has saddened the local community in Batu Kikir, a small town known for its quiet surroundings and close-knit residents. Road safety remains a serious concern, especially along routes with sharp bends and waterways nearby.

Authorities continue to remind motorists, particularly senior drivers, to exercise extra caution when navigating bends and rural roads. Proper vehicle control and alertness are crucial in preventing such tragic outcomes.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on determining the exact cause of the accident. The police have assured that a thorough probe will be carried out to establish all relevant factors.

The death of the elderly woman serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of road travel and the importance of vigilance at all times.
