Abused 5-Year-Olds Receive Full Care and Education Support KPWKM Assures

Abused 5-Year-Olds Receive Full Care and Education Support: KPWKM Assures

KUCHING, Feb 13 – The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of two five-year-old girls who were victims of public abuse by their mothers. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri assured that their education and care will remain a priority under the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

Speaking after officiating the Symbolic Handover of the MADANI Community Welfare Program Replica Cheque for Santubong Parliament, Nancy stressed that children in JKM care will not be denied their right to education, even while their court cases are ongoing.

“Children under JKM’s protection continue to attend school according to their age. We ensure they are not marginalized,” she said.

Education and Welfare Prioritised

Nancy explained that JKM works closely with the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) to guarantee that these children’s education progresses without interruption. Appropriate schools are assigned based on their age and location to ensure smooth enrollment.

“KPM has agreed to facilitate their school admissions. We don’t want legal proceedings to obstruct their schooling,” she added.

Apart from education, JKM also ensures that the children’s emotional well-being is monitored. Those returned to family members go through a strict vetting process before placement is approved by the court.

Holistic Support at JKM Care Centres

Children in JKM care are provided a conducive environment that encourages normal development. They participate in educational activities, social interactions, and play to promote healthy growth.

While specific religious instruction is not provided at JKM centres, Nancy clarified that relevant experts handle this aspect when necessary.

“We welcome cooperation from NGOs and the community to further support the children’s welfare,” she said, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in creating a safe environment.

The nation was recently shocked by a viral video of a five-year-old girl allegedly beaten by her mother in a public place. The incident, which occurred at a supermarket, left the child injured after falling and hitting a bench corner. The mother is currently in police custody.

Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek personally reached out to the family to ensure the child’s preschool enrollment. Assistance such as food, financial aid, and school supplies has also been provided to safeguard the child’s welfare.

Nancy expressed hope that this case serves as a lesson to be more sensitive to children’s well-being. “May these children grow up in an environment filled with love and compassion,” she said. – TVS
