SIMUNJAN: A tragic accident on Jalan Gedong today claimed the lives of a father and his young daughter. The collision, involving a Proton Wira Aeroback and a 10-tonne fuel lorry, occurred around 1.26pm, according to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Group (PGO).

Seven personnel from the Simunjan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were dispatched immediately after receiving the distress call. Upon arriving at the scene, the team found the Proton Wira severely damaged, with the driver trapped inside.

“Three other victims had been thrown out of the car during the accident,” said the Operations Commander in a statement. Rescuers worked to extricate the trapped driver, but the father, identified as Sim Geok Chiew, 37, was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Ministry of Health.

His daughter, who had also been ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced dead on the spot.

Two other passengers, an adult woman and a young girl, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries. Both were rushed to Simunjan Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The lorry driver escaped unharmed.

The rescue team concluded their operations at 3.15pm after ensuring the area was safe and clearing debris from the road. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police for further investigation.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder for road users to exercise caution, especially when sharing the road with heavy vehicles.
