KUCHING, 16 February 2025 – Sarawak’s healthcare scene welcomes a new player as Borneo Health Care Sanctuary Sdn Bhd officially opens in Kuching. This marks a major milestone in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services and education, offering alternative healthcare options to the people of Sarawak.
The launch event began at 3:00 PM at Borneo Health Care Sanctuary, with the guest of honour, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South, representing YB Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian. The celebration started with an exciting firecracker lighting ceremony and a lion dance performance, symbolising good fortune and success. After that, guests were given a special tour of the healthcare centre, showcasing the facilities and services offered.
Following the tour, the event continued at Sheraton Kuching Hotel, where prominent speakers shared their insights on the future of TCM in Sarawak. Among them were:
- Dr. Philip Loh, Director of Borneo Health Care Sanctuary
- Prof. Dr. Ng Po Kok, President of the TCM Association
- Prof. Dr. Siva Sundram, Executive Director of Spectrum University College
- Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South
One of the biggest highlights of the event was the MOU signing between Borneo Health Care Sanctuary and Spectrum Holdings (M) Sdn Bhd. This partnership aims to train future TCM practitioners and expand TCM education in Malaysia.
During his speech, Datuk Wee Hong Seng expressed his strong belief in traditional medicine, stating, “I’m a believer in Chinese medicine.” He emphasised the importance of TCM as a trusted alternative to modern treatments.
One of the key figures at the event was Mr. Albert Lee, a young and visionary businessman who played an important role in the establishment of Borneo Health Care Sanctuary. Representing YB Dato’ Ir. Lo Khere Chiang as Secretary General of the Sarawak Chinese Medicine Federation, he said:
“Today, I have the privilege to witness the birth of Borneo Health Care Sanctuary.”
He also acknowledged the presence of Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Tan Sri Yee Ming Seng, and Dato Sri Tan Kit Weng, who witnessed the MOU signing between Borneo Health Care Sanctuary and Spectrum International University College.
Dr. Philip Loh, in his speech, expressed his gratitude to all supporters and partners. He shared how his journey to Kuching began when his friend, Andy Lee, encouraged him to bring his TCM expertise to Sarawak. After two years of visiting patients in Kuching, he and his wife, Dr. Crystal Ang, decided to relocate from Kuala Lumpur to establish Borneo Health Care Sanctuary.
Dr. Loh emphasized the growing global demand for TCM, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlighted their charitable program for stroke patients, which has already helped many regain mobility.
“We hope to train the next generation of TCM physicians and enhance treatments for various illnesses,” he said. “Our goal is to ensure more people receive quality care through Traditional Chinese Medicine.”
The event ended with a tea break and VIP dinner, where guests celebrated this significant milestone for TCM in Sarawak. The grand opening concluded at 8:00 PM, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Borneo Health Care Sanctuary and the future of TCM in Malaysia.
