Man Found Drowned, 16-Year-Old Nephew Still Missing in Limbang River

Man Found Drowned, 16-Year-Old Nephew Still Missing in Limbang River

LIMBANG, Feb 16 – A 62-year-old man who went to set up fish nets with his teenage nephew was found drowned near Kampung Pulau Brunei, Limbang today. His 16-year-old nephew remains missing, prompting an ongoing search and rescue (SAR) operation.

Tragic Discovery After Fishing Trip

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, the elderly man and his nephew went to the river at 1pm yesterday (Feb 15) to set up fishing nets. However, when they failed to return home, a worried relative went to search for them.

At around 11.24am today, the relative made a tragic discovery—the man’s lifeless body had washed ashore on the riverbank near Kampung Pulau Brunei. The teenager, however, was nowhere to be found.

Rescue Team Mobilised

Following the distress call, a team from the Limbang Fire and Rescue Department was dispatched to the scene at approximately 2.30pm. Upon arrival, they retrieved the victim’s body and handed it over to the police for further action.

With the teenager still missing, authorities launched a SAR operation covering a 2-kilometre radius along the river and nearby land areas.

Search Operations Suspended at Nightfall

By 5.30pm, rescue teams gathered for a briefing on the progress of the operation. However, as daylight faded, the SAR team had to suspend the search at 6pm. The operation is set to resume tomorrow morning.

Authorities urge local villagers and river users to stay cautious, especially during the ongoing monsoon season when river conditions can be unpredictable.
