SARIKEI: In a move to improve infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents, two bridges on Jalan Council Jakar and Jalan Sungai Ribong in Sarikei are set to be upgraded. The project will transform the existing bridges into more robust iron structures, each costing an estimated RM350,000.
The announcement was made by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Sarikei and Repok State Assemblyman. He shared that the project is currently in the surveying phase, with the tender expected to be opened soon.
“These two bridges are critical for the residents living around Sungai Ribong and Jalan Council Jakar. Upgrading them is essential to ensure safe passage and improve the comfort of those who rely on these routes daily,” Dato’ Sri Huang stated.
The project comes after multiple complaints from residents regarding the deteriorating conditions of the two bridges. A formal repair request was submitted by Dato’ Sri Huang to the local authorities, which led to the initiation of this much-needed upgrade. The new iron bridges will be designed to provide better durability and enhance road safety.
During a site inspection, Dato’ Sri Huang was joined by officers from the Repok Service Centre, Sarikei District Council (MDS), and the Sarawak Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) Sarikei Division. The inspection aimed to assess the condition of the current bridges and ensure that the upgrade project would proceed smoothly.
Dato’ Sri Huang also expressed his gratitude to the relevant departments for their prompt action in addressing the issue, ensuring that the project would positively impact the local community.
With the tender process to begin shortly, the upgrade of these bridges is expected to significantly enhance the daily commute for Sarikei residents, contributing to a safer and more efficient transportation network. – UKAS EDITION
