MIRI, 19 Feb 2025 – Miri is taking public transport to the next level with the introduction of modern smart buses and the opening of the new Miri Sentral Bus Terminal. These initiatives aim to make public transport more efficient, affordable, and eco-friendly, benefiting residents, students, and tourists.
Sarawak’s Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, highlighted that the Miri City Smart Bus service is part of the state government’s commitment to improving urban mobility.
“The free bus service provides a greener and more convenient way for people to travel. It also helps reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions,” he stated.
A total of 14 brand-new Volvo buses with 33 seats and space for 21 standing passengers have been introduced. These buses come with:
✅ Free Wi-Fi for passengers
✅ Real-time GPS tracking via the SMART CITY app
✅ LED screens displaying routes
✅ Low-floor ramps for easy access to disabled passengers
The service currently covers eight key routes in Miri, including Permyjaya, Senadin, Taman Tunku, Tudan, Miri Hospital, Sungai Rait-Bakam, Kuala Baram, and RTM. Since its launch in January 2024, the buses have served 72,329 passengers, proving their popularity.
To further improve Miri’s transport system, the new Miri Sentral Bus Terminal began operations on January 18, 2025, replacing the Pujut Bus Terminal. The terminal is located along Miri Bypass and features:
🔹 12 ticket counters and 14 bus platforms
🔹 12 retail outlets and two cafes
🔹 Spacious waiting areas with comfortable seating
🔹 Disabled-friendly toilets and facilities
Passengers can now purchase tickets more conveniently via the Easybook Terminal Management (ETM) system, which supports online, counter, and mobile app bookings. The introduction of QR code-based tickets also speeds up the boarding process and reduces counter congestion.
Operating daily from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, the new bus terminal and smart bus services mark a significant step towards making Miri a modern and sustainable city.
