KUCHING: A tragic accident occurred on Jalan Astana last night, claiming the lives of two motorcyclists after they crashed into a four-wheel drive (4WD) that allegedly made a sudden turn.

Kuching District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, stated that the accident happened at around 11.00pm. The victims, aged 31 and 32, were riding on a motorcycle when they collided with the SUV.

“As a result of the collision, both victims were thrown into the middle of the road. The motorcycle pillion rider died at the scene due to severe head injuries, while the motorcyclist succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital,” ACP Mohd Farhan said in a statement today.

The driver of the 4WD has been detained to assist in the investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

Road Safety Concerns

The accident has raised concerns about road safety along Jalan Astana, especially at night when visibility is lower. Authorities urge all road users to exercise caution, particularly when making turns or changing lanes.

This incident is a grim reminder of the dangers faced by motorcyclists on the road. Motorists are advised to follow traffic rules and be extra vigilant to prevent similar tragedies.
