SIBU (March 21) – Four water treatment plants (WTP) in central Sarawak have been forced to shut down due to severe flooding and dangerously high river water levels. The Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) confirmed the closure as a necessary measure to ensure public safety and protect critical infrastructure.
JBALB director, Awang Mohammad Fadillah Awang Redzuan, stated that the affected water treatment plants are the Song WTP and Beguang WTP in the Kapit Division, as well as the Nanga Dap WTP and Kanowit WTP in the Sibu Division.
“Our teams in every section will continue to monitor the situation at the WTPs from time to time,” he assured in a statement. JBALB remains committed to ensuring that water supply disruptions are minimized and that services resume as soon as conditions allow.
The shutdown has raised concerns among residents who depend on these plants for their daily water needs. JBALB has urged affected residents to be patient and assured them that efforts are underway to restore services as soon as it is safe to do so.
Despite the closures, JBALB has confirmed that other WTPs across Sarawak are still operating as usual. The department is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
