KUCHING: The Sarawak Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to higher education by abolishing education loans worth RM8 million for students from low-income families.
Datuk Fazruddin Abdul Rahman, Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, revealed that in the past year alone, the foundation had written off education loans totaling between RM7 million and RM8 million for students studying at public higher education institutions (IPTAs).
“The cancellation of these loans depends on several factors, including academic performance, student applications, and in cases where a student has passed away, the loans will be automatically written off,” he explained during an interview at the Hari Raya 2025 Open House.
Government’s Commitment to Education
He further emphasized that this initiative highlights the Sarawak government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that students from the state are not left behind in their education journey, thereby creating greater opportunities for their future.
“We believe that through the Sarawak Foundation, many students have received the support they need to continue their studies without financial burdens,” he added.
The move aligns with Sarawak’s vision of becoming a knowledge-driven and progressive state, where education remains a key priority for development.

Several prominent leaders attended the event, including Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Deputy Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (Law, MA63, and Sarawak-Federation Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
