Power Bank Explosion in Lorong Matang Jaya Sparks Safety Fears

Power Bank Explosion in Lorong Matang Jaya Sparks Safety Fears

KUCHING, 7 April 2025 – A peaceful evening turned tense for a family living at Lorong Matang Jaya 6A5 when a power bank in their home suddenly exploded, raising concerns over the safety of electronic devices.

According to a statement from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre (PGO), the alarming incident was reported at 8.30pm last night. A team of six firefighters from the Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was immediately dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the small fire had already been extinguished by the occupants themselves. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the damage was contained.

“No fire extinguishing efforts were required from the fire brigade. The team only carried out monitoring and inspection to ensure that there were no remaining sources of fire or danger,” said the spokesperson.

The operation was officially called off at 9.10pm after the fire team confirmed that the home was safe and there were no further risks.

This incident has left many local residents feeling uneasy, especially as power banks have become a common household item. Safety experts have long advised the public to avoid using low-quality or unbranded charging devices, and to avoid overcharging them or exposing them to heat.

This event serves as an important reminder for everyone to stay alert when using electronic gadgets and always follow manufacturer safety guidelines.

Authorities encourage residents to report any suspicious overheating or malfunctioning devices to prevent more serious incidents from happening in the future.
