Kuching Doctor Leads Malaysia in Advanced Pain Treatment!

KUCHING, 16 April 2025 — When it comes to managing chronic pain without surgery, few names in Malaysia stand out like Dr. Chen Chee Kean, a leading interventional pain physician and consultant anesthesiologist at Kuching Specialist Hospital.

Dr. Chen’s medical journey began in 2002 when he earned his MD from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). He later pursued his Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2010. Driven by passion and precision, he continued his subspecialty training in Singapore, India, the USA, and Europe, specialising in pain management.

In 2012, Dr. Chen achieved a major milestone when he became one of the earliest Malaysians to pass the Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP), awarded by the World Institute of Pain, USA. His expertise was further recognised when he was made a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia (FAMM) in 2013.

Currently the President-Elect of the Malaysian Society of Interventional Pain Practitioners (MSIPP), Dr. Chen is at the forefront of promoting pain medicine in Malaysia. He regularly speaks at medical conferences and workshops both locally and internationally. His contributions to the field include over 20 scientific publications, and he serves as editor and reviewer for several reputable international medical journals.

What sets Dr. Chen apart is his non-surgical approach to treating chronic pain using modern, precise and targeted techniques. These include:

  • Radiofrequency treatment (pulsed and thermal)
  • Laser therapy for prolapsed disc
  • Balloon decompression for spinal stenosis
  • Nerve blocks using anaesthetics and steroids
  • Intra-articular injections for joints like knees and shoulders
  • Trigger point muscle injections

He treats a wide range of conditions, from trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain), migraine and neck pain, to diabetic nerve pain, pelvic pain, and even vascular-related limb pain.

In a time when many still resort to long-term medication or invasive surgeries, Dr. Chen’s minimally invasive techniques provide safe, effective, and targeted relief—a much-needed breakthrough for chronic pain sufferers in Malaysia.
