Car Catches Fire on Sungai Menyan Bridge, Fully Destroyed

SIBU, 1 May 2025 – A Perodua Viva car was completely destroyed in a fire incident that took place on the Sungai Menyan Bridge this evening, shocking motorists passing through the area.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said they received an emergency call about the incident at 4.55 pm. In a swift response, a team of seven firefighters from the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was dispatched to the location along with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT).

According to the department’s spokesperson, the car was already fully engulfed in flames when the team arrived. Firefighters immediately carried out extinguishing work using a hose line to control and douse the fire.

“The car, a Perodua Viva, was 100 percent burnt in the middle of the bridge. Our team acted fast to contain the fire and ensure it didn’t spread or cause further danger to road users,” said the JBPM spokesperson.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the incident. Firefighters also conducted overhaul work to prevent any flare-ups and ensure complete safety at the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and authorities have urged the public to always ensure their vehicles are in good condition, especially when travelling long distances or in isolated areas.

The incident caused slight traffic disruption along the bridge, but the situation has since been brought under control. Road users are advised to stay cautious and alert at all times.
