KANGAR, 2 May 2025 – Perlis police made a major drug bust on Tuesday after seizing 409 kilograms of marijuana worth an estimated RM1.3 million from an abandoned fibre boat at the mouth of Kuala Sungai Baru river in Simpang Empat.
According to Perlis Police Chief, Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim, the operation was carried out after authorities received a tip-off about a suspicious boat without a registration number at around 2.00 pm.
Acting on the information, a joint team comprising the Kuala Perlis Police Station Task Force, Kedah/Perlis Marine Investigation Unit, Kangar District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, and Simpang Empat Police conducted surveillance for two hours.
“There was no movement detected near the boat throughout the observation period. Our team then moved in to inspect it,” said Datuk Muhammad in a press conference held at the Kangar District Police Headquarters (IPD).
Upon inspection, the team discovered several boxes containing compressed packages of drugs, believed to be marijuana. The boat was towed to the Kuala Perlis Police Station for further investigation.
Further checks revealed 24 boxes containing a total of 409 packages, each weighing approximately 1 kg, said Datuk Muhammad. All items were seized and classified under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
Police believe the drugs were intended for local distribution, and investigations are ongoing to identify the suspects involved.
This seizure is considered one of the largest in Perlis this year and marks a significant success in the fight against drug trafficking along the northern border of Malaysia.
