SARIKEI, SARAWAK – A new chapter in Sarawak’s development unfolded today as Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg officially launched the Batang Rajang Bridge, a key part of the Sarawak Central Zone Coastal Road Network.
This RM321 million mega project spans 1.44 kilometres, linking Pasi Road to Tanjung Manis—directly connecting Sarikei and Bintangor to one of the state’s major economic hubs.
Describing the bridge as more than just concrete and steel, the Premier said it represents the state government’s vision to close the gap between urban and rural development. “The completion of this bridge does not only provide easier access, but acts as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive economic growth across the region,” he said during the official launching ceremony.
The new Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang bin Tuanku Othman Bridge has reduced the distance between Sarikei and Tanjung Manis from 122 km to only 53 km, cutting travel time from over two hours to just 45 minutes. Similarly, Bintangor to Tanjung Manis is now just 60 km, down from 108 km.
To mark the occasion, Premier Abang Zohari rode across the bridge on a motorcycle, accompanied by fellow dignitaries and a convoy of high-powered motorcycles, symbolising connectivity, unity, and forward momentum.
The bridge is expected to ease logistics, improve trade routes, boost tourism, and offer better access to healthcare and education for residents along the coastal zones.
