KUCHING, 28 May 2025 — More than 758,000 Sarawakians have received financial help under the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) initiative, with a total payout of RM464.5 million distributed through the S Pay Global e-wallet, said Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
He shared this update during his winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly, which concluded today. The SKAS initiative, which was launched earlier this year, aims to reduce the burden of living costs while boosting household spending and empowering small businesses, especially local traders and retailers.
“This effort shows our commitment to inclusive and fair development,” he said. “No one should be left behind. We want to ensure progress reaches every layer of society.”
The Premier added that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government is not only focused on physical infrastructure, but also improving the socio-economic well-being of the people.
He proudly shared that SKAS is encouraging more rural communities to adopt digital technology. Youth groups, village committees, and women’s associations are now using digital tools to run their activities, share information, and promote their local products online.
“The use of S Pay Global is no longer limited to urban areas. Now, it is becoming common in rural villages too,” he said. “This improves efficiency, visibility, and strengthens the local digital economy.”
The Premier highlighted that this transformation is helping build a digitally literate society — one that is ready to embrace and adapt to future digital advancements.
“Our digital shift is not just about convenience. It is about empowering communities to thrive in the modern economy,” he said. – Sarawakku
